Abstract

In publishing this issue under the title “Inclusion of Persons With Disabilities. Policies, Practices, Research and Narratives”, the Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies (LJCS) becomes, indeed, the first Portuguese journal on social sciences to dedicate one of its issues exclusively to the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWD). Thus, it is an important milestone as it contributes to constructing a fairer and more inclusive society for PWD...

Author Biographies

Carlos Veloso da Veiga, Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Sociedade, Instituto de Ciências Sociais, Universidade do Minho, Braga, Portugal

Carlos Veloso da Veiga is a PhD in sociology, an associate professor with aggregation in the Department of Sociology of the University of Minho and a researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre. His research interests focus mainly on disability and rehabilitation organisations for people with disabilities. He has been involved as a scientific consultant and evaluator in several research/action projects. He is the author and co-author of several books and scientific articles focusing on disability and rehabilitation.

Luísa Martins Fernandes, Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Sociedade, Instituto de Ciências Sociais, Universidade do Minho, Braga, Portugal

Luísa Martins Fernandes is PhD in sociology, a special education teacher, collaborating researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre and a trainer accredited by the Scientific and Pedagogical Council for Continuous Training. Her research focuses on professional inclusion, independent living, self-determination, participation in the community and quality of life. She has been published in book chapters and scientific articles of relevance to the field of disability. She won the 2019 edition of the António Dornelas Award with her doctoral thesis Ação Organizacional e Qualidade de Vida: Um Estudo Comparado do Norte de Portugal e Galiza no Campo da Deficiência Mental (Organisational Action and Quality of Life: A Comparative Study of Northern Portugal and Galicia in the Field of Mental Disability). The Vicente de Risco Foundation awarded the thesis to be published in Galicia, Spain. In the 2018 edition of the António Dornelas Award, she received an honourable mention for co-authoring the publication “Inclusão Profissional e Qualidade de Vida” (Professional Inclusion and Quality of Life).

Miguel Angel Verdugo, Instituto Universitario de Integración en la Comunidad, Universidad de Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain

Miguel Angel Verdugo is a full professor of disability psychology, the director of the Instituto Universitario de Integración en la Comunidad de la Universidad de Salamanca. He has coordinated more than 100 funded research projects. He is the director of the scientific journal Siglo Cero. He is included in 2020 (PLOS-Biology) in the Ranking of the World Scientists: World’s Top 2% Scientists of Stanford University, in the list of the most influential researchers in the world.
