Abstract

In this article, considering photography as a medium of cultural recording capable of revealing complexities, we investigate the representation of migration at the Mexico–United States (US) border in Monica Lozano’s photographs. Drawing on the idea of photographs as media of memory, we propose to analyse these photographs through exercises in montage, bringing them into articulation with images of the Nazi concentration camps in Germany, not to establish a historical equivalence between events, but to make explicit how certain visual forms of dehumanisation, containment, and violence may reactivate, in the present, a transcultural memory of violence and abandonment. It is interesting to reflect on what the montages reveal, in thinking through the plasticity of images of the migratory crisis at the Mexico–US border, and in the convergences and divergences between the images of the camps. The first part of the essay discusses the theoretical and methodological frameworks that form the basis of the photographic analyses, namely the materiality and transculturality of memory and montage between images. In the second, through montage, we examine Lozano’s photographs in the works Concertina (Concertina wire; Lozano, 2024), Come Hell or High Water (Lozano, 2023), and Hugs Not Walls (Lozano, n.d.). We propose a mosaic of images that suggests that Lozano’s photographs evoke the transcultural memory of concentration camps, resonating, without establishing historical equivalence, with visual traces of authoritarianism, suspension, and violence. In the third, we analyse in detail four montages that construct bridges between past and present, identifying visual resonances between historically distinct forms of vulnerability, violence, and dehumanisation, without equating the specificity of the Holocaust with the contemporary migratory crisis. We conclude that correspondences and the survival of images foster a form of memory activism, connecting past and present and illuminating the question of migration.
