Abstract

This contribution examines colonial continuities and the presence of whiteness in social relations across three Global South countries. It draws on the memories and experiences of a diverse group of educators teaching in public schools in Johannesburg, Maputo, and São Paulo. The analysis is situated within contemporary frameworks relevant to the realities of South Africa, Mozambique, and Brazil. The article presents a sample of teachers’ narratives collected in loco between 2020 and 2021, along with the methodological procedures used to select them. Furthermore, it presents local contextualisations and critical analyses of the shared discourses as research findings. The article further proposes adopting decolonial and anti-racist praxis as strategies for collectively constructing alternative ways of being and existing in public spaces, particularly within the Global South. Decolonial scholarship, especially that originating from the regions central to this research, is cited to support these arguments. Overall, these societies show the persistence of colonial structures and the reification of whiteness, supporting the critical discussion that underpins the article’s central premise.
